currently re-reading

This is one of my favorite books. I tend to read it at least once a year. I don't think it's amazing literature or anything, but I relate to the main character on several levels and I find it inspiring. Last time I read Julie, I was in Cambridge--almost a year ago! It's amazing how fast the time does fly...

snow, snow, go away

(via weheartit)
This has been one of the cloudiest winters I have experienced in Northern Nevada. While it is typically pretty cold at this point in the winter, it is usually cold with blue skies and a pale sun. This year has been very overcast with what seems like daily rain or snow. I know that we are in a drought and need all of this moisture, but I have to admit, I feel that the lack of sunshine is making me a bit moody (yes, I'm going to blame the weather). Oh well, I suppose I'll take advantage of the weather by staying in and cozying up with a blanket and some tea and get some good reading done : )

"Aravis also had many quarrels (and, I'm afraid, even fights) with Cor, but they always made it up again: so that years later, when they were grown up, they were so used to quarreling and making up again that they got married so as to go on doing it more conveniently."

My parents must have read this to me at least two or three times when I was a child, but I have to admit that I don't recall anything about the characters or the plot in general...

jeweled tights

After seeing this post by Emily over at Cupcakes & Cashmere, Valerie and I knew that these jeweled tights would be our next little project to tackle. While Emily recommended using fabric glue, Valerie and I struggled for about half an hour with jewels sliding off of our legs before we decided to get out the hot glue gun. The tights turned out great! I wore them out on New Years Eve and they received a lot of compliments! Unfortunately, this is the best picture that I have of them. Maybe I'll be able to update with a better picture of Valerie and I both wearing them this weekend...

I've been obsessing over white clothes accented with bright accessories. Part of this is due to these gorgeous photos from Rio taken by Garance Dore, and the other part is likely due to the time that I've been spending down in Southern California.

It snowed in Reno last night. This has been a long and cold winter for us. We need the moisture, but I am over the cold. Maybe that means that I'm getting old...

j.crew in prague

I am loving these shoot videos that J.Crew has been making with the release of their new catalogues--they are so beautiful and fun.

"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes...the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules...You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things...they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see the genius, because the ones who are
crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."
Steve Jobs

This was a great book and a pretty quick read. I learned a lot about Chanel which surprised me. You have to admire her drive and ambition. And, of course, her style.

Polaroid Sisters

After seeing this post on the English Muse, I thought it would be fun to find some sort of tool online that gives plain old digital photos a Polaroid look. A simple Google search revealed the Instantizer! It's not as cute as the iPhone app that the English Muse used, but it's still fun.

Rembrandt, Becher & The Work Ethic in American Art

It was a little cold for ice skating, so Justin & I decided to check out the Rembrandt etchings on display at the Nevada Museum of Art. It was a great exhibit--it's amazing that he was able to create so many images and so much dimension with just a collection of tiny lines. rembrandt, etching, art

While the Rembrandt etchings were impressive, my favorite exhibit was a collection of industrial photographs by Bernd & Hilla Becher. I love how arranging the photographs in a grid allowed me to examine the different lines and see the beauty in the functional: water towers, gas tanks, pitheads, industrial buildings, etc.

I also enjoyed an ongoing exhibit at the NMA titled "The Work Ethic in American Art." It is a collection of paintings featuring laborers, work environments, and workers at rest. My favorite works of literature depict everyday American life, so it was no surprise to me that I enjoyed these paintings as much as I did. I particularly loved on work titled "The Logger" and I can't remember the name of the artist.

new years,sisters,Reno

Happy New Year! 2009 was such a great year for me--I toured the British Isles with one of my best friends, landed my first full time marketing position, graduated from college, and fell in love. I'm excited to make 2010 just as great, and maybe even better!
