our first Christmas

Photobucket
Our little family. Typical Chloe bringing us a toy so she can play.

My other beautiful sister.
Photobucket
I just wanted to document that my 15 year old brother actually wanted a Snuggie.
Photobucket
In my parents' circle of friends, they made 3 rules for my dad that applied to social functions. I think they were: (1) he had to have fun, (2) he had to be nice, and (3) he couldn't fall asleep. Now you know why...Photobucket
Chloe in her adorable/ugly Christmas sweater.

I couldn't resist playing with my new camera on the drive home.

My handsome hubby driving.
Photobucket
Beautiful mountains.

We spent Christmas in Nevada with my family. It was so great to see my parents and my sisters and brother--I have really missed them. I'm sure that Justin was totally overwhelmed with my big, loud family, but I'm so thankful that we were able to spend this special holiday with them.

How was your Christmas? Did you get to spend it with your family?

chocolate peppermint pretzels

Photobucket
Melting chocolate in the double boiler.Photobucket
I used a meat tenderizier and a towel on the cutting board to break the candy canes down into little bitty pieces (next time I would put them in a Ziplock bag instead of using the towel).Photobucket
A cookie sheet full of pretzels hand-dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with peppermint bits.Photobucket
Fresh out of the fridge and ready to be packed up for the trip to my parents' house for Christmas!

I made these dark chocolate pepperment pretzels partly to put in my mom's stocking from Santa and partly to share with my family over the Christmas weekend. They are delicious, fun and easy to make!

What is your favorite Christmas treat to share with family and friends?

30 for 30: day 22

Photobucket
pants: gap; shirt: american apparel; jacket: target; boots: victoria's secret; necklace: forever 21; rings: forever 21 & banana republic

And I am finally going to get around to posting the last of these pictures...This is my new favorite shirt. I've figured out how to wear it everyday since I got it back from the tailor! It's such a perfect color and I love that I now have a classic menswear shirt that fits me perfectly! I can't wait to pair it with my metallic cheetah print skirt and my lace pencil skirt.

congratulations, chloe!

Chloe graduated from Puppy School tonight! Between her graduation class and Christmas cards, I'm not finishing my 30 for 30 outfit posts tonight, but I promise to have all of the pictures taken and posted by the weekend!

master bathroom "design board"

PhotobucketRemember this post about our bathrooms from forever ago? Well, I've finally pulled my act together and decided what I want to do with our master bathroom. Putting these little collages together is so helpful! I was originally planning to do something totally different altogether, but as I was adding the pictures to my board I realized that it was awful. So, here are my final choices.

1. Striped Cabbage Rose Shower Curtain (urban outfitters $38)
2. Oh How I Love Thee Grey Block Print (etsy $20)
3. B&W Wall Hook (anthropologie $18)
4. Lenox Bath Towels in Polished Platinum (macy's $12-$48)
5. Baroque Ceramic Soap Pump (target $12.99)
6. Baroque Ceramic Tumbler (target $8.99)
7. Benjamin Moore Fresh Olive (benjamin moore)

I have been in love with this shower curtain from the first time that I saw it pop up on the UO website, and it just happens to go perfectly with the BM Fresh Olive paint that is already in the room. Justin's aunt bought the Lenox towels for us as a wedding gift and I highly recommend them--they are so nice and big and soft. Justin and I both love artwork that is very graphic and modern, and I like that this ties in the grey towels which tie in the paint color in our bedroom. I'm kind of afraid of colors so I like to mix black and white prints, and I love the combination of the striped hook, scroll print soap dispenser, and polkadot tumbler (toothbrush holder). I'm excited to post some updated photos for you once I get this all put together!

our first christmas tree

Photobucket
I finally found the right size stand for our tree!
Photobucket
And got it all set up.
Photobucket
With pretty pearly white lights.
Photobucket
Justin and I trimmed the tree with a combination of my personal collection (which is very small) and the remainder of the vintage ornaments mentioned here.
Photobucket
Justin placed the star on top of the tree while Chloe supervised.
Photobucket
And here is the finished product: our first Christmas tree!

I think our first Christmas tree turned out very prettily, but I think that after Christmas I'll try to pick up some new gold and silver balls on sale as a backdrop for our more personal ornaments. I love the look of an eclectic, personal Christmas tree over a themed tree for our main family Christmas tree. However, I think it would be fun to do a little Chanel themed tree like this one in our bedroom.

What about you? Do you do a glamourous themed tree, or is your tree decorated with a combination of new and old and ornaments made by sweet little children?

december read

Photobucket
(via google image search)

This month's pick from the College Bound Reading List is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. It sounds to me like it's going to be a cross between To Kill A Mockingbird and The Color Purple. Is anyone interested in reading along with me?

christmas ball wreath

My father-in-law was helping an older lady clean out her garage, and she asked him if he wanted to take a huge box of vintage Christmas ornaments (from the 1960's still in the original packaging). He took them and passed them onto me. Now, this is a huge box, and I wanted a new Christmas wreath for our front door, so I decided to make one using some of these ornaments. I did a google search and the first thing that popped up was this project from Eddie Ross which only required a wire hanger, lots of Christmas balls, and a hot glue gun. I had all three of those things in my house, so I went for it.

Form the wire hanger into a circle:

Use the hot glue gun to fasten the tops to the ornaments and string the hanger through the little loop at the top:

Alternate ornaments for desired pattern, and continue to add to it until the wreath is full, hiding the hanger:

Here is my finished product:

I had this pink ribbon in the house, and the wreath has some pink in it, so I went for it.

Did you make a holiday wreath for your door this year?

december/christmas wish list

Photobucket
1. Rugged Carats Dress (anthropologie $118)
2. PERRIN Boot in Brown (steve madden $199.95)
3. Elle Decor Subscription (elle decor $14.95)
4. Globe Pendant (west elm $99)
5. Vitalize Blouse (anthropologie $68)
6. Pom Pom Slippers in Bone White (gap $19.99)
7. EXPEDIT Bookcase in black-brown (ikea $199)
8. PROPPERR in Taupe Nu (steve madden $99.95)

While doing my 30 for 30 Challenge, I have come to realize that I desperately need more prints in my wardrobe. My go-to for beautiful print pieces is Anthropologie, and they did not disappoint me this time (even though I haven't been 100% in love with their last 2 catalogs--am I the only one?). We have hardwood floors throughout our condo, and now that the weather has turned a bit cooler I'm needing some slippers to keep my toes warm and my feet soft, and the faux fur pom pom on these ivory slippers just make me smile. I've been looking for the perfect pair of brown flat boots, and these lace-up ones are so edgy yet classic--one of my favorite details is the red zipper on the inside. I also love the sweetness of these little bow booties. They would be perfect with a LBD for holiday parties or with jeans and a cargo jacket. Now that making our condo into a home is my first priority, I'm loving Elle Decor more than any other printed design catalogs (I also love Rue online). This West Elm pendant light is perfect for our dining room (I HATE the light fixture that is currently residing there)--it's so sleek and subtle yet statement-making. I also love this trend of square cubbies in bookshelves, and this one from IKEA is perfect for our office (and would allow us to move 3 bins of books out of the garage and into the house!).

What are you wishing for this Christmas?

Hmmm...I swear this outfit looked way better in real life. I think it might have been better with different shoes? And maybe it would have looked better if I had taken my coat off for the picture? Oh well, at least Chloe looks adorable in her new coat : )

30 for 30: day 16

Photobucket
jeans: old navy; tee: american apparel; cardigan: j.crew; scarf: target (I think); boots: victoria's secret; handbag: brahmin; earrings: world market

I wore this to LACMA the day after Thanksgiving instead of doing any Black Friday shopping. I went with my friend, Sarah, who went to high school with me in Michigan and now we're both living down in Southern California. Isn't that crazy? It really is such a small world. LACMA is a great art museum to visit if you are in the area--it's very close to the Grove/Farmers' Market and it's part of the Miracle Mile/Museum Row.

30 for 30: day 15

Photobucket
dress: j.crew; sweater: j.crew; tights: urban outfitters; shoes: nine west

I love these tights but I think this is the first time that I've worn them. Two people at work told me that at first glance they thought that I had gone out and gotten full leg tattoos. Hmm...not so sure that's the look that I'm going for...

Well, I've reached the half-way mark! I'm realizing that I need to work on accessorizing. So, that's what I'll focus on in my next 15 outfits! I also need to invest in some more versatile cardigans (after the 30 for 30 is over, of course...) to update my classic pieces.

It was cold and rainy this weekend, so this is what I wore whenever I had to leave the house. I'm loving this red plaid peacoat--doesn't Old Navy have some cute jackets for this winter?

This was my outfit for date night with my hubby. We went to our favorite sushi place and then saw Due Date which was hilarious. Downtown Brea was all decorated for Christmas and it was so cute. These giant ornaments were all over the place--aren't they fun?

30 for 30: day 3

Photobucket
skirt: ann taylor, top: h&m, cardigan: j.crew; tights: target, shoes: nine west; necklace: forever 21
I love this skirt. I originally bought it to wear for our wedding (we had planned to elope), but didn't end up wearing it. I like it with just the black top and tights, but it has been so cold in the mornings and my office is usually freezing, so I threw this sweater on.
Photobucket
And I wore the new shoes! Aren't they fun?
