the marina

There are little pockets of Reno that I really enjoy. One of those pockets is the Sparks Marina. Tonight, Katie and I stopped by the Forever 21 soft opening where I picked up a fun green & black plaid scarf, a great layered chain necklace, some stackable rings that have a grandma-jewelry feel, and a grey satin headband with a quirkily oversized bow. After wandering through the gigantic store for about an hour and a half, we headed over to the marina for some fish tacos. Yum... : )

dinner & a movie

I love working with produce that is in season, and fall produce season is one of my favorites. This yummy salad is comprised of a 5-lettuce mix, thinly sliced pear, green & purple grapes, pecans, gorgonzola crumbles, and a balsamic vinaigrette.
My dad bought a bottle of this Ironstone Obsession Symphony and I ended up buying another bottle of it when I was doing my grocery shopping this week.
This was actually my first time watching The Talented Mr. Ripley. I really enjoyed it--it definitely has a very interesting and well-developed plot which I find typical for movies/roles chosen by Matt Damon.

In my Integrated Marketing Concepts class we've been discussing the good/bad/ethical sides of advertising. Do companies have an obligation to society in their advertising practices? One topic which we ended up spending a lot of time discussing was female body image, particularly for girls in high school and younger.

This video isn't anything new, but my friend used it in her presentation last night and I found it captivating. Hopefully it will encourage all of the beautiful women who stumble across it here : )

Autumn Begins!

The Netflix recommendation feature recently brought this television show to my attention. Leverage stars Timothy Hutton as Nathan Ford and Gina Bellman as Sophie Devereaux. The two are the fearless leaders of a team of con artists which functions as a modern day Robin Hood with the tagline, "sometimes bad guys make the best good guys." The cover firm, Leverage, takes on clients who have been wronged in some way by the very wealthy, and the team cons them in order to right the wrong. So far, there are two seasons of this clever and engaging show (both of which are available on Netflix "Watch it Now" at the moment!). Leverage is family friendly, so you can even enjoy it with your mom : )

diy: headbands

As my mother, sister, and I were wandering around Target yesterday afternoon, we happened upon the accessories section and fell in love with some of the headbands that we saw. Valerie and I decided that we should stop at Michael's on the way home to find some supplies for making our own headbands. We found some great little feather plumes and the little glittery silver leaves with a Grecian feel were found in the Christmas crafts/decorations department. We used a plain scunci headband to make the feathered headbands, and double-stranded headbands from Claire's for the silver leaf headbands. I can't wait to wear these out!

Tartan Scarf {Topshop $32}
While I love plaid, I'm very picky about the colors and the lines. I love how the blues and greens on this remind me of my school uniform days. This scarf would look perfect paired with my charcoal gray peacoat.
Keegan Plaid Coat {Delia's $100}
I've been looking for a fun coat to add to my collection of basic black overcoats and military-style jackets for the fall/winter weather. The cheery red and feminine cut of this coat would give me a reason to look forward to the cold walks to class this winter.
Ruffle Checked Pencil Skirt {Topshop $70}
What's not to love? This looks like a grown-up, sexy version of my school uniform skirts from high school. And, I'm loving the pencil skirt sillhouette right now.
Eclectic Sequin Bib Necklace {Forever 21 $18}
These pretty bib necklaces are everywhere right now. They're a fun way to add some sparkle/interest to an otherwise neutral look. I would love to pair this with a heathered grey tee, some black skinny jeans, and black or nude pumps.
Flower Sequin Cutwork Top {Topshop $90}
As my wardrobe consists of mainly black tops, it is unusual for a white top to catch my eye. I love the floral design that the sequins make--it makes the top feel vintage and modern at the same time.
Sequin Mini Skirt {Forever 21 $16}
When we were down in LA at the beginning of the summer, my sister and I went to this great thrift store where I found a Betsey Johnson scalloped sequined mini skirt for $20. And...I didn't buy it. Ever since then, I've been dying to get my hands on a black sequined mini.
Vintage Fur {ebay}
I've been wearing a faux fur coat for years now and I ALWAYS throw it on when I'm feeling a bit under the weather. I love the way this one is long and feels like a wrap. It looks so cozy for those cold days when you don't really want to go outside.
Plume Feather Mini Skirt {Intermix $765}
This skirt is beautiful. If I had $800 to drop on a skirt, this would be mine. I love the color of the features, and the texture is amazing. I would definitely pair this with black opaque tights and some killer stilettoes.
Calvin Klein "Parma" {Zappos $120}
I actually own these shoes, and they are gorgeous! I didn't like them at first, but once I tried them on, I couldn't take them off. The snakeskin lends them an almost iconic feel. I think I'll be wearing these shoes for many years to come.

Over the weekend, I decided to set aside some time to take down my spring/summer lights and lanterns to transition into fall. I stopped by Starbuck's to grab my token Pumpkin Spice Latte for the season, then I popped You've Got Mail into the DVD player. This is becoming my little tradition : )

I bought these adorable little jack-o-lantern paper lanterns at World Market last year, and they still make me smile everytime I see them : )

dawn patrol

Jackie, Emily, Emily's fiance, and I all woke up way too early this morning to go to the dawn patrol of the Great Reno Balloon Races. Jackie bought Dough Boy donuts for us yesterday which was a nice treat for the early morning hours. I can't even remember the last time I ate a maple bar.

The "glow show" really is very pretty, and I love seeing all of the colorful balloons floating in the sky once the sun rises. This weekend always marks the beginning of the fall season for me for some reason.

girls' night-ish

Emily, Jackie, and I went out with to our favorite local Irish pub for some drinks, then we headed over to our favorite DB watering hole for some yummy french fries before heading home to get a couple of hours of sleep before dawn patrol! I love these girls.

P.S. Photo taken on the new phone! Definitely still playing around with it...

new phone!

After much deliberation, I finally decided on getting the BlackBerry Tour 9630. After some input from some of the guys in my life, I decided against getting a touchscreen phone. I'm so thankful for all of the input because I love this phone so far! It's a world phone, has Microsoft Office mobile, and the internet connection is amazing! I have a feeling I'll be playing with this for the rest of the night... : )
